AFL player's cheeky jab after retirement gaffe

//

Gold Coast Suns midfielder Michael Rischitelli has taken a cheeky swipe at Channel 7 after an embarrassing gaffe saw him feature incorrectly in a highlights package for retiring AFL players on Brownlow Medal night.

The players who have elected to call it a day at the end of 2018 featured in a montage tribute on the big screen but there was surprise when Rischitelli’s name popped up.

It was less than a month ago that a report surfaced that he would be delisted by the Suns for 2019 before being redrafted again as a rookie.

“Thanks for the highlight package Channel 7,” Rischitelli posted in a tweet to 7AFL.

“But I’ll see you all in 2019.”

The Suns also moved to clear up any confusion after posting a tweet with a link to the original report from August 30 where it was confirmed Rischitelli would play on again next season.

The 32-year-old former Brisbane Lion and 15 season AFL veteran said at the time he still believed he had a lot to contribute as a player.

“It’s great to see the direction the club is heading under coach Stuart Dew, and I’m excited by the opportunity to be able to play on in 2019,” Rischitelli said.

Gold Coast Suns' Michael Rischitelli will play on again in 2019.

“I definitely feel there is a lot I can still contribute around the club.

“Playing a new role in defence this year allowed me to see the game differently and lead our young group out on the field.

“My body has held up really well this year and it’s great to get some continuity back into my football after a couple of years with only a handful of games.”

Not surprisingly, social media lit up following the blunder with some punters believing Rischitelli may have been confused with Matt Rosa after the former West Coast midfielder announced his retirement at the Suns earlier this season.
