'He's going to explode this week'

//

Andrew Johns says Sharks fullback Valentine Holmes is ready to “explode” when Cronulla plays Melbourne at AAMI Park for a spot in the NRL grand final.

The Sharks have won four of their last five games against the Storm and are regarded as the side most likely to upset the premiership favourites, as the two sides clash in a finals match for the first time since the 2016 grand final.

“He provides that x-factor,” Johns told Wide World of Sports.

“He gets on the right and likes to run that outside-inside play, whether off Matt Moylan or Luke Lewis. I thought Holmes was a little bit quiet last week against Penrith, so I get the feeling he’s going to explode this week.”

Johns says the battle of the two fullbacks will be worth watching, with Holmes up against the retiring Billy Slater.

“I have Billy Slater in my top three players of all time, he changed the way fullbacks play. There’s no doubt he’s a future immortal,” Johns said.

With only three matches remaining in the season, the battle couldn’t be closer at the top of the Wide World of Sports tipping competition. Johns, Brad Fittler and Phil Gould are all level on 114, with Peter Sterling, Darren Lockyer and Wally Lewis out of contention.

You can catch the Storm vs Sharks live on Nine from 7pm Friday, and Johns is tipping the Storm’s stars to shine.

“The spine is going to stand up, Billy Slater, Cameron Munster and Cameron Smith. They’ll be incredibly hard to beat down there, but if one team can get under their skin it’s the Sharks,” Johns said.

Wally's Tips: Finals Week 3

The other preliminary final pits the Roosters up against arch-rivals Souths, live and free on Nine from 7pm Saturday.

It’s been a tumultuous week for the Rabbitohs with the team never far from the headlines, and Fittler says that could be a factor.

“I thought they looked tired last week, they looked tired against the Dragons. Everyone anticipated they’d just roll over the top …. I thought Souths were a little bit down,” Fittler said.

“They were in the papers all week, it just tires you out. It will be interesting to see how Sam Burgess is this week. He was interviewed on Tuesday and he looked a bit tired as well, which is normal.”
