Linesman appears to celebrate offside goal

//

English Premier League linesman Harry Lennard has found himself in hot water after appearing to celebrate an offside Arsenal goal that he failed to flag down in their 2-0 victory over Everton.

The visitors managed to keep the Gunners to a scoreless first-half when they travelled to Emirates Stadium on Sunday having won just one game this season.

That deadlock was broken in 56th minute with a wonder strike from Alexandre Lacazette, and three minutes later Arsenal found themselves in with a double when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted home from the six-yard box.

Replays showed the Gabonese striker to be well offside after Aaron Ramsey’s improvised flick pass trickled onto his right boot, but even more incriminating was the sight of linesman Harry Lennard appearing to fist pump in celebration of the offside goal he failed to call.

The quick double dashed the visitors’ chances of a comeback and had their faithful calling on the governing body, the FA, to sanction Lennard.

Everton boss Marco Silva slammed Lennard’s blatant miscall after the match as his side struggles to find their feet following a woeful previous season.

“There was a big mistake by the assistant because their second goal is clearly offside and that was a big crush for us,” Silva said.

“It’s really frustrating because at that moment we only had one player in our box and it was so clear where their players were.

“It’s a bit strange for me that the assistant could not see where Aubameyang was but we can all make mistakes.

“We were in control of the game until then and it was really hard for us to come back after that.”
