Roosters see off Rabbits to book spot in GF

//

The Sydney Roosters will meet Melbourne Storm in the NRL Grand Final but they face an anxious build-up after halfback Cooper Cronk injured his shoulder in the preliminary final win over South Sydney Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Roosters prevailed against their arch rivals 12-4 in a tough-as-teak battle where points were at a premium and their defence was put to the test time and time again as they stood tall and repelled wave after wave of attack from the Rabbitohs.

The Roosters outscored their opponents three tries to nil, with wingers Daniel Tupou and Blake Ferguson grabbing a try apiece while rookie centre Paul Momirovski – who was a surprise starter for the suspended Latrell Mitchell – scoring at the end to seal the result.

The biggest talking point however was the injury to Cronk, who was recruited from Melbourne Storm to help the tricolours take the next step after they fell short at the preliminary final mark three times in the last four years.

He was crunched hard in a tackle by Souths halfback Adam Reynolds while attempting a field goal at the end of the first half, and struggled with it throughout the rest of the match as the Souths defence hunted him down and continued to test him.

The Roosters would be desperate for him to play against his former club in the NRL Grand Final, with Cronk a chance to face former Storm teammates Cameron Smith and Billy Slater after forming a premiership-winning combination with them before leaving at the end of last year.

MORE TO COME.
