Sam tipped to break silence on sexting scandal

//

NRL superstar Sam Burgess is expected to break his silence on Tuesday on the sexting scandal engulfing South Sydney Rabbitohs as his pregnant wife, Phoebe, posted a family photograph on Instagram.

Burgess has been in the spotlight ever since his social media account was linked to lewd images being sent to a young woman following a match against the Warriors earlier in the season with the matter now being investigated by both the club and the NRL’s Integrity Unit.

The Rabbitohs lock has remained tight-lipped about the incident but is expected to speak at a media call on Tuesday as the club prepares for a preliminary final against arch rivals the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

Burgess was interviewed by Nine’s Brad Fittler after the Rabbitohs semi-final win over St George Illawarra last Saturday night but deflected a question away over the sexting scandal and commented only on how the win over the Dragons had been ‘scrappy’ but good.

His wife Phoebe, who is heavily pregnant with their second child, was not at the game on Saturday night but posted a photograph on her Instagram account of her having a picnic with their first child, daughter Poppy, and the caption, ‘Moments in the sun with our babies.’

Burgess is not in the photograph but the picture shows a man’s shadow in the background.

There are reports that the matter could now be finalised within 48 hours, with the NRL’s Integrity Unit and the Rabbitohs trying to get with the woman at the centre of the investigation who is currently overseas in South Africa.

While Sam has not commented on the situation yet, his younger brother and Rabbitohs forward Tom told 9News after the Dragons match that he had made a ‘mistake.’

“He’s disappointed,” Tom said.

“Obviously he’s made a mistake but he’s going to be all right.

“There’s an investigation going on but they’ll sort it out now.”
