Abbas destroys Australia in devastating day four spell

//

Pakistan paceman Mohammad Abbas has earned rave reviews from his fellow international cricketers after his stunning spell put Australia on the back foot on day four.

After Australia began the day in a solid manner, Abbas took out Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Aaron Finch and Tim Paine all in a space of four overs in a devastating space of play that left Australia staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.

The Pakistani spearhead's furious day four spell caught the eyes of South African quick Dale Steyn, who predicted that Abbas would soon be named the number one ranked bowler in Test cricket.

Abbas' four second-innings wickets came after his five-wicket haul in the first innings resulted in Australia being bowled out for just 145.

The 28-year-old's nine wickets in the second Test brought his series tally to a whopping 16 and brought his total for the calendar year to 33 wickets in just five tests at an incredible bowling average of 12.17.

Abbas only made his Test debut for Pakistan in April last year against the West Indies, but has a prolific first-class career where he has picked up 384 wickets at an average of 20.10 since making his debut for Sialkot back in February 2009.

The Pakistani quick also became the first pace bowler to pick up 15 wickets in a Test series played in the UAE, beating out fellow Pakistan fast bowlers Umar Gul and Junaid Khan who both took 14 wickets apiece. However, more impressive is the fact that Abbas has taken 16 in just two tests while Junaid and Gul both took three Tests.

Several other international cricketers, both past and present took notice of Abbas' impressive spell.
