Bennett shopped to Sydney club: report

//

The NRL season wrapped up just a few days ago but that hasn’t stopped the coaching rumour mill going into overdrive for next season.

Seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett has reportedly been shopped to the Wests Tigers as a replacement for Ivan Cleary, as the joint venture looks to solidify its future amid talk Cleary will join his son Nathan at the Panthers according to The Australian.

Despite Cleary being under contract with Wests until 2020, the club may seek to part ways with him at the end of next season if they can land an experienced coach like Bennett, who was told his services would no longer be required at Red Hill past the 2019 season.

Both Cleary and Bennett are managed by SFX Sports making a potential move easier to complete.

The Tigers want a seasoned coach to replace Cleary, making Bennett the most logical and viable option, having coached more than 800 first grade games and won a host of premierships.

Cleary has refused to comment on his future after 2020 but its widely expected he’ll link up with his son at the foot of the mountains at the completion of his current deal, but if the Tigers can snare Bennett he may be able to leave early.

Another coach being considered by the Tigers is former Rabbitohs premiership winner Michael Maguire. It’s been reported that the Broncos and Manly have expressed interest, with the Broncos being his preferred destination.

However, South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold has also been linked to Red Hill, who is about to enter the final year of his Rabbitohs deal.
