'In any other game, that is a free kick'

//

AFL greats have thrown further weight behind the assertion that Willie Rioli blocked Brayden Maynard to set up the match winning goal in the AFL grand final, saying the play should’ve been penalised.

Legendary Carlton player Robert Walls believes the umpire made the wrong call when Rioli  appeared to block Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard as West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed jumped for the ball.

Sheed put the ball between the sticks, ensuring the Eagles won their first premiership in 21 years.

Walls said he didn’t want take anything away Sheed’s mark but there was a time when that would’ve been called a free-kick.

“It was a mark certainly. The question is was it a block? Did Rioli block Maynard? I think he did. I’m happy enough that it wasn’t paid,” Walls said on AFL Tonight.

“I tell you what, if Razor Ray had of been umpiring — he would’ve paid a free kick against Rioli for blocking Maynard’s attempt at the footy.”

“He (Ryan) blocked for Sheed. They’re smart (footballers), they know how to do that.

“I’m happy enough that it wasn’t paid but as I said, a couple of other umpires if they had the whistle, they would’ve put it in their mouth.”

Walls wasn’t the only to side with Collingwood fans.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Essendon great Tim Watson believed a free kick should have been called.

“It is umpired differently in a big game,” Watson said.

“I think they swallowed their whistles in the last quarter. They decided this game won’t be decided by our decision making.

“In any other game, that is a free kick.”
