Langer's simple advice before Khawaja ton

//

Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has revealed the advice he gave Usman Khawaja prior to the opener's stunning century in the first Test against Pakistan.

In the first Test tour for Australia after the ill-fated trip to South Africa in March, the Aussies were once again staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat in Asian conditions, before Khawaja's 141 of 302 balls saved the Test for Australia.

Following the match, Langer revealed how he allowed the 31-year-old veteran to stop looking over his shoulder.

"People have talked about whether he can play spin bowling. I never had a single doubt that Usman Khawaja could play spin bowling," Langer told reporters.

"Honestly, the last three months (he’s been saying), ‘What do I need to do for the UAE, JL?’

"Just keep smiling, mate."

The tour is also Langer's first Test tour in charge of the side, and he praised Khawaja for getting into prime physical condition in order to counter the gruelingconditions in the UAE.

"I’ve got so much admiration for Uzzie. Look at him. He’s got himself really, really fit," Langer said.

"He’s done all the hard work. He’s a beautifully talented player and he’s got an amazing temperament so with that smile and that temperament he brings great leadership to the group."

Khawaja also praised Langer for his strong communication with the playing group since taking over from previous coach Darren Lehmann.

"I think JL is an extremely good communicator. You know when he talks to you about cricket, he’s so passionate and he just wants the best for everyone," Khawaja said.

"Whenever you talk to him about cricket, you know it’s coming from a good place.

"You can chat to him about the game and you can express your opinions and he won’t take it to heart, and he does the same."
