Panthers star suffers 2019 setback

//

Blues Origin and Penrith star Nathan Cleary will undergo ankle surgery tomorrow and will miss much of the lead-up to the 2019 season.

Cleary secretly carried the ankle injury all last season, playing through the pain in a brave bid to guide the Panthers into the big games.

And club officials are happy for Cleary to get a break from the grind of pre-season training after a spectacular season in 2019 that saw him lead the Blues to Origin victory and come of age as an NRL player.

The youngster will be fit well in time for the 2019 kickoff in March and will be the key man in the club’s premiership quest.

“It was a big season for Nathan,” Panthers boss Phil Gould told Wide World of Sports.

“He took on a huge amount of responsibility and after missing eight games early with a knee injury, he ignored the ankle problem to play a key part in our campaign.

“People have to remember he is still only 20 years old and a nice four month break from training at this stage will do him the world of good.”
