Rachel Khawaja moved to tears by epic innings

//

The wife of Australian cricket hero Usman Khawaja says she “couldn’t be more proud” after her husband’s heroic match saving innings in the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai.

Khawaja batted for nearly nine hours to lead Australia to safety from a seemingly impossible position, forever putting to rest doubts about his ability to play in Asian conditions.

His wife Rachel was moved to tears as Khawaja reached his seventh Test hundred, capping a man-of-the-match performance from the 31-year-old.

“It’s been a long road to get here but I never doubted you for a second!!” Rachel posted on Instagram.

“You have worked so hard and have never given up and I couldn’t be more proud of you! Still a big job ahead for the boys, let’s hope we can keep it up!”

A host of current and former players have lauded Khawaja, after one of the finest innings seen by an Australian player in recent years.

Mark Waugh described Khawaja's knock as "one of the best tons you will ever see," while former Pakistan player Shahid Afridi tweeted: "this was Test cricket at its best."

Suspended former skipper Steve Smith also paid tribute to his successor Tim Paine, whose unbeaten 61 consumed nearly four hours. Smith tweeted that Khawaja and Paine were "outstanding", while former captain Michael Clarke said it was a "brilliant effort from the Aussie boys holding out for a draw."
