The reason behind Ricciardo's Red Bull depature

//

Former F2 champion and Daniel Ricciardo's close friend Davide Valsecchi has revealed the reason behind the Australian's departure from Red Bull Racing.

Ricciardo shocked the F1 world in August with his announcement that he would depart from Red Bull in order to join Renault and now Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen has been revealed as the reason for his departure.

According to Valsecchi, Ricciardo could no longer take being Verstappen's understudy.

"Daniel does not want to be a second driver at Red Bull," Valsecchi told Dutch magazine Formule 1.

"It is clear that Verstappen is preferred within the team.

"Max jumped into a car unknown to him and was in the qualification immediately right behind Daniel: more or less equal.

Despite his friendship with Ricciardo, Valsecchi admitted that Verstappen was the better driver.

"Max is better; I understand why he received double or triple the salary of Dan," he said.

"Max is extreme in everything. Extremely young, extremely good and extremely confident."

Valsecchi also added that he believed Ricciardo's departure from Red Bull was due to his pride rather than a step towards winning.

"I appreciate that in him," Valsecchi said.

"But Daniel also knows that in the coming years he will not compete for the world title at Renault."
