Bennett to announce immediate coach swap

//

Broncos players have been requested to attend Broncos HQ with coach Wayne Bennett expected to announce he will be leaving the club before next season in a coach swap with South Sydney's Anthony Seibold.

Bennett called in all Broncos players for a meeting with speculation rife the long-time Brisbane mentor will officially confirm a 2019 swap with South Sydney's Anthony Seibold.

A press conference is scheduled for 1pm (AEDT) in Brisbane.

Players arrived to a media pack anxious to confirm reports that Bennett would leave Red Hill immediately to coach Souths in 2019, a year earlier than was originally planned since signing with the Redfern club for the 2020 NRL season.

When asked whether Bennett is departing, one of the legendary coach's biggest supporters Darius Boyd was defensive and angry at the media attention.

"Who's the criminal? It's disappointing that you guys are acting like someone has done something seriously wrong. No-one is a criminal, no-one needs to be chased around," Boyd said.

"Whatever happens, happens. Rugby league is not the be all and end all, it's just a game and everyone including the media need to remember that.

Andrew McCullough was equally in the dark about the developing news.

"I don't know, mate, I don't know," McCullough told reporters questioning him about Bennett.

"I'm not sure, a bit of stuff going on this year I suppose.

"I don't know what's going on, I never have. It's a pay grade above me."

On Thursday night Nine News sports reporter Ben Dobbin said Bennett would announce the coaching swap with Seibold on Friday and could be in Redfern "as soon as Monday next week".

"Bennett in my understanding looks like he will head to South Sydney," Dobbin said.

Seibold is reportedly already be in Brisbane.

The long-running saga appears over after both clubs thrashed out financial details for the swap.

"I have got a decision to make and the club has got a decision to make - we will sort it out," Bennett told reporters on Friday morning.
