Cup-winning jockey's epic pre-race promise to wife

//

Kerrin McEvoy took out his third career Melbourne Cup on Cross Counter but he may be feeling the pinch after a stunning pre-race promise to his wife Cathy.

Speaking to media prior to the race, McEvoy revealed that he had promised his kids a swimming pool and his wife a house if he took out a third Melbourne Cup, and now he is set to stay true to his word.

"I did promise (the kids) a swimming pool," McEvoy said.

"But Cathy and I have been looking around for a bigger house, and I said to one of the Herald Sun reporters, if I won I’d buy Cathy a new house. So look out!"

McEvoy's win was also special for the family as it was Cathy's first time seeing him win the Melbourne Cup after missing his 2016 ride with Almandin.

"I said to Kerrin last night, because I missed out when he won on Almandin when I was pregnant, 'please win it tomorrow because I feel like I’m here and I missed out that year'," she said.

"So I can’t believe it. I’ll be definitely on the lookout (for a house) now."

McEvoy launched himself into rare company with his 2018 win, joining the likes of Glen Boss, Darby Munro and Damien Oliver as jockeys to win three Melbourne Cups.

Harry White and Bobby Lewis hold the current record for most Melbourne Cup wins by jockey with four wins apiece.
