Cross Counter has claimed the 2018 Melbourne Cup as jockey Kerrin McEvoy picked up his third title on a track that left a lot to be desired after heavy morning rain.

Trained by Charlie Appleby Cross Counter burst to the front of the pack in a blistering late surge in the final 200m to pip race favourite Marmello at the post in the $7.3 million two-mile classic.

They were trailed by A Prince of Arran who lost his legs despite a brave late move.

McEvoy won his third Melbourne Cup, riding Cross Counter to victory. He is the brother in law of Melbourne Cup winner, Michelle Payne who won the Cup with Prince of Penzance in 2015.
