Miracle Simmons defense hands Sixers thriller

//

Ben Simmons has been been lauded for his terrific defense in a game-saving play in an overtime thriller against the Charlotte Hornets at the Wells Fargo Center.

The 76ers looked set for an easy victory at one stage, holding a 21-point lead, but a furious Hornets comeback took the game to overtime where Simmons showcased his immense defensive potential to deliver the Sixers a 133-132 win.

With the Hornets down three in the final 20 seconds, Simmons blocked All-Star guard Kemba Walker's three-point attempt before miraculously contesting rookie Miles Bridges' three-pointer in the same possession.

Following the game, Embiid's All-Star teammate Joel Embiid praised the Australian for the play, calling him one of the best defenders in the NBA.

"That was huge," Embiid said.

"Obviously he's one of the best defensive players n the league and he did his job and that (block) gave us a win."

Embiid scored a season-high 42 points and Simmons logged 22 points, eight rebounds, 13 assists, two steals and three blocks on an efficient 9-of-15 shooting from the field.

Embiid also had 18 rebounds, Dario Saric added 18 points and JJ Redick added 17 off the bench as the Sixers improved to 7-0 at home for the first time since 2002-03.

It was the eighth game for Embiid this season with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hornets' Kemba Walker scored 22 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as Jeremy Lamb added 17.
