Cricket legend’s amazing Roy Orbison story

//

Like the players, cricket commentators have to find ways to keep themselves and the audience stimulated throughout rain delays for any given Test match.

The start of play on day three of the first Test against India was put back due to some precipitation after a sweltering opening to the match and Fox Sports caller Kerry O'Keefe thought it would be fitting to share a tale of his chance meeting with music icon Roy Orbison during a rain delayed Sheffield Shield  match in 1975.

“We were booked into a hotel to play South Australia and Roy Orbison was booked into the same hotel. All night I was on Roy watch at the bar waiting for him to come back. I didn’t meet him for the first two nights,” O’Keefe said.

“Finally I sent a bottle of champagne to his room and got the room number from the girl at reception and knocked on his room door at 1am.

"This guy with a purple nightgown game to the door with black sunnies, and I said ‘Kerry O’Keefe, NSW Cricket team. He said ‘How you doin?’ I sent you the champagne I’m a huge fan. And he came out into the corridor and had half a bottle of champagne with us.”

O’Keefe got the shock of his life the next morning when he looked out his window to see sun shining bright without a cloud to be seen.

“The next day, I thought it was going to rain all day and we were going to get out with a draw.

"No, the sun came up, we’d been singing Roy Orbison songs until 4am. I had to bat, first ball I walked out I was humming ‘Pretty Woman’”.
