Knights' Safiti exonerated in hotel altercation

//

Newcastle Knights star Jacob Safiti has been exonerated by police from any culpability following an incident outside a Hamilton bar at the weekend.

In a statement released by the Knights it is claimed that Safiti attempted to defuse a situation involving other innocent bystanders, which led to the forward suffering a broken leg.

The matter will proceed to the courts but Saifiti has not been charged.

On Monday it was reported that the Knights forward was rushed to hospital early on Sunday morning after being punched and falling awkwardly.

The Newcastle front-rower was reportedly drinking with teammates before being involved in an altercation with the brother of Sydney Roosters and Australian captain Boyd Cordner.

"Having fallen awkwardly as a result of the punch, Saifiti injured his leg and was transported to hospital by security staff," the Knights said at the time.

Saifiti is regarded as a promising talent at the Knights after making his debut in 2016.

Since making his NRL debut, the 22-year-old has appeared in 47 games and scored three tries.
