Mayweather destroys MMA star for $65k a second

//

Floyd Mayweather has pocketed $65,000 per second for a Round 1 TKO of Japanese MMA star Tenshin Nasakuwa, in a bizarre exhibition match that turned nasty on New Year's Eve at Saitama Super Arena.

Mayweather, the unbeaten 50-0 boxing legend, took on a man 4kg smaller who had never boxed professionally. He duly knocked Tenshin down three times inside the first round, bringing him to tears, before the Japanese fighter's corner threw in the towel after two minutes and 19 seconds.

With Mayweather paid $US9 million for the bout, it was a neat payday for 139 seconds of work. The fight, a three-rounder had it gone the distance, will not appear on either fighter's official record.

“It was all about entertainment — we had a lot of fun. They wanted this to happen in Japan, so I said, ‘Why not?’" Mayweather said, according to the BBC.

“I’m still undefeated. Tenshin is still undefeated. Tenshin is a true champion and a hell of a fighter.

“I want the fans around the world to support Tenshin, he’s a great guy and a great champion.”

Mayweather, 41, was taking on a fighter 20 years his junior. Tenshin is a rising star in kickboxing and mixed martial arts with RIZIN, the Japanese promotion that staged the fight.

Yet the American legend revealed that he had not even trained properly for the fight, adding to Tenshin's humiliation.

“Did I have a training camp for this fight? No. I went to the gym a few times,” Mayweather said.

The bout was seen as a bizarre novelty by the fight community, many of whom had their say on Twitter. Among them was Manny Pacquaio, with a barely-veiled criticism of his former rival, while leading US boxing writers were horrified.

MMA writers pondered how good Conor McGregor really was, given the Irish UFC megastar took Mayweather 10 rounds in their 2017 exhibition fight. Khabib Nurmagomedov's manager Ali Abdelaziz tried to goad Mayweather into a bout with his fighter, the current UFC lightweight champion who just beat McGregor.

Other pundits simply marvelled at Mayweather's ability to make big money.
