UK pundit's astonishing attack on Socceroos

//

A UK football pundit has unleashed an extraordinary attack on Australia for taking Celtic star Tom Rogic out of the Old Firm derby to play in the Asian Cup.

Chris Sutton, a former Premier League and Celtic player capped once by England, unloaded on the Socceroos during a BT Sports broadcast. Rogic's Celtic side will face old foes Rangers on Saturday, but the 'Wizard of Oz' will be missing due to a looming Asian Cup opener against Jordan on January 6 in the UAE.

"The thing which has upset me a bit ... is the Tom Rogic situation and him not being able to play against Rangers," Sutton said.

"I think Australia have got Jordan in the Asian Cup. You don't need Tom Rogic to bump [off] Jordan, absolutely not ... in any way, shape or form."

Reminded that another Scottish club, Hibernian, would be missing three Australian players due to the Asian Cup (Mark Milligan, Martin Boyle and Jamie Maclaren), Sutton went again.

"It's not right. There's a lot of Scottish football fans thinking that the Socceroos should shove their XXXX somewhere where the sun doesn't shine," he said.

"It's not on! It's Mickey Mouse football, stick to your prawns and your barbecues, Australia."

The rant, whether tongue-in-cheek or not, drew the ire of Aussie football pundits. The Socceroos will be defending the continental title they won on home soil in 2015 when they launch their Asian Cup campaign.

Socceroos legend and former Rangers player Craig Moore also chimed in, saying he found the comments amusing.
