Australian Open's most heartbreaking moment

//

The longest women's match of this Australian Open ended with the tournament's most heartbreaking moment as Chinese player Zhang Shuai broke down in tears on the side of the court, tortured by her loss after establishing a winning position.

However the scene soon quickly got emotional for a more positive reason when her opponent, Elina Svitolina, approached her chair and briefly sat with her, offering some kind words and a gentle touch on the shoulder.

It's the human side of sport that makes it so captivating for fans around the world and Zhang's sadness followed by Svitolina's kindness and grace in victory would be enough to warm even the coldest of hearts.

It came after the two players engaged in an absorbing battle for an epic two hours and 55 minutes with Zhang holding the upper hand for much of the battle.

After taking the first set 6-4, the Chinese world number 42 was forced into a decider after Svitolina fought back to win the second set by the same scoreline.

The momentum swung again when Zhang got an early break in the third, bolting to a 3-0 lead and eyeing just her second appearance in the fourth round of a grand slam.

However, Svitolina, who earlier in the tournament made headlines for an awkward interview in which it was revealed she was in a new relationship with French star Gael Monfils, got the match back on level terms soon after before grabbing the decisive break and clinching the match 7-5.

After shaking hands at the net, the enormity of Zhang's missed opportunity seemed to dawn on her as she sat slumped in her chair and burst into tears.

Exhausted, she lingered courtside for longer than is customary for the loser of a tennis match, prompting Svitolina's act of kindness as the crowd roared its approval.
