Hewitt reveals biggest disappointment about Tomic spray

//

Lleyton Hewitt has broken his silence to refute claims there of a rift in Australian Davis Cup after Bernard Tomic unloaded on the team captain in an extraordinary spray last night.

Hewitt said he “had a bit of a laugh” at the timing of Tomic’s tirade, coming after a straight sets loss to Marin Cilic, but admitted he was “disappointed” that it had taken the spotlight off some of Australia’s good news stories after a terrific start to the Australian Open from the locals.

“I had a bit of a laugh to be honest, especially after a loss last night going in and complaining about a few things, so for me I just laugh it off and move forward,” Hewitt told Channel Nine in an exclusive interview.

“I'm working with so many of the guys as well, so I'm still excited. I guess the disappointing thing, the Ausies had such a great day yesterday on both the men's and the women's side and it probably got overshadowed by Bernard's comments.”

Among other claims, Tomic said that “no one liked” Hewitt among the young Australian playing group, dragging Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis into the fray with him.

Hewitt said there was no truth to claims of a rift and claimed the communication lines between he and the players were always open.

“I don't think there's a rift, there's always communication going out between the captain, coaches and the players, and leading into the next tie that will all happen,” Hewitt said.

“But these guys have all got big matches, the communication we've spoken before, the Australian Open we'll continue to speak after the Australian Open into the next Davis Cup tie, then we work out next week our next team moving forward for the Adelaide tie, but for me I just love being a part of helping the Australian players as much as possible.”
