Langer hits out at reporter over Maxwell 'conjecture'

//

Australian coach Justin Langer has vehemently shot down “conjecture” over Glenn Maxwell’s omission from the latest Test squad.

Maxwell was again denied the opportunity to don the baggy green on Wednesday when his name was glaringly absent from chief selector Trevor Hohns’ squad to face Sri Lanka later this month.

Despite Maxwell failing to making his squad once again, Langer suggested that the communication between he and the star Victorian all-rounder was clear.

"Glenn is crystal clear from me and the selectors about what he needs to do to get back in the Test team," Langer told reporters.

Justin Langer

"He’s shown he’s brilliant around the group in white-ball cricket.

"There’s been some reports about personality, it is literally false, it is not true

"It’s important that he knows that, and I know that as one of the selectors and any conjecture about it, that’s all part of the noise ."

After another series and another omission for Maxwell, Langer was prodded by a reporter for an explanation regarding an alleged directive from selectors for the all-rounder to focus on white-ball cricket and give up an opportunity to play county cricket in England.

"Are you certain that's what happened?" an annoyed Langer replied to the reporter.

Glenn Maxwell

“Did that happen? You’re telling me it happened, I’m asking you did it happen.”

“I’ve got zero knowledge of that.

“Careless whispers, hey?”

Following the terse exchange, Langer later apologised to the reporter while sporting a wry smile.

"Sorry for getting grumpy," he said.

"I don't like getting grumpy, but there's so many stories that go around about so much stuff.

"The truth is a beautiful thing."
