Selection axe sharpens for SCG Test

//

Australia are yet to make a call on their XI for the fourth Test against India as Tim Paine mulls how best to reshuffle his batting order, though Aaron Finch may be axed for the SCG series decider.

Paine says conditions will determine which members of the 14-man squad are left on the sidelines. Veteran cricket writer Peter Lalor, of The Australian, said Finch appeared to be on the outer after struggling with his opening batting assignment thus far.

Even if Finch is spared the axe, he may be demoted down the order as the hosts consider promoting Usman Khawaja to open. Lalor also noted Khawaja's apparent batting position on the SCG scoreboard on Test eve:

Australia must also decide whether to axe all-rounder Mitch Marsh after a forgettable MCG Test. Leg-spinning all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne was called into the squad for Sydney, while Peter Handscomb could also be recalled after missing the Melbourne Test due to poor form.
