Aussie dubbed 'the coolest punter ever'

//

US fans of American football are all mesmorised by a new Australian college player they're calling 'the coolest punter ever'.

Mandurah's Louis Hedley is the latest from Down Under to join the long list of graduates from the Prokick Australia program, including NFL stars Michael Dickson, Cameron Johnston and Jordan Berry, as he begins his journey in division one college football.

The 193cm tall, 100kg punter committed to the University of Miami late last year but finally put pen to paper this week, officially announcing his arrival at the home of the Hurricanes.

"It's official!!! I'm a Cane. Thank you to everyone that has helped me get to this point," Hedley said on Twitter.

An image of his tattooed, bulky body complete with a moustache at the signing day quickly went viral online as American football fans identified a new cult hero.

Miami's coach Manny Diaz flagged their new recruit's arrival with some Australian-themed tweets but ex-NFL punter Pat McAfee was among those most excited.

The New York Post called Hedley the “most intimidating punter you’ve ever seen”, Sports Illustrated called him "the coolest-looking punter ever" and the Miami Herald declared the Aussie "your new favourite Hurricane".

ESPN Sportscenter's Scott van Pelt dedicated a segment on his show to Hedley, naming the Aussie as the "Best Thing He's Seen".

"The best thing I saw today, an Australian punter. Look at him. He looks like an adult. He is, in his mid-20s. And yeh, he's going to punt for The U.

"If anybody was born to punt for The U it's that guy. Look at him. Swag on a billion."

Hedley, 24, used to be a scaffolder, and recently became a father, but pursued a dream to play college football, starting out at junior college and red-shirting there.

'The U' got him on a transfer from the City College of San Francisco and now the bright lights of Miami await.
