Gavrilova loses her cool after Fed Cup capitulation

//

The Fed Cup clash between Australia and the US will be decided by the final doubles rubber after Daria Gavrilova capitulated in her singles match against Danielle Collins.

America's Collins defeated Gavrilova 6-1 3-6 6-2 to even the world group first round tie 2-2 heading into the doubles in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday.

Following the loss Fed Cup coach Nicole Pratt and captain Alicia Molik had a word to Gavrilova. It's not known what was said but it prompted the fiery world no.47 to smash her racquet in frustration.

Gavrilova and Australia's top player Ashleigh Barty were slated to play Nicole Melichar and Collins in the doubles decider, but Priscilla Hon was selected to the line-up for Australia in place of Gavrilova.

Nine Wide World of Sports' Jelena Dokic said because of the short turnaround from the singles to the doubles, there was doubt Gavrilova could back up, but she was shocked that Hon was chosen ahead of Astra Sharma.

"I'm not surprised with that decision [to replace Gavrilova]. We were wondering whether Dasha was going to be able to regroup mentally and come out 20-30 minutes later and play this doubles match because she was really disappointed with the singles," Dokic said.

"So probably the right decision, but to have Priscilla Hon playing doubles, I think we're all surprised with that, maybe we thought Astra Sharma would play with Ash Barty.

"Just because of how well she's done in the doubles, last year played a lot of doubles, she's played college tennis as well, and played so well at the Australian Open in the mixed doubles final.

"There's a lot that goes on in the Fed Cup week in the lead up to the weekend and I'm sure Alicia Molik knows what she's doing. I'm sure Alicia has her reasons for it. Maybe they just combine really well."

Barty gave Australia a 2-1 lead earlier Sunday when she defeated America's top-ranked player Madison Keys 6-4 6-1.

The winner of the doubles will move on to play Belarus in April's Fed Cup semi-finals.

The other semi-final will be France against Romania.
