Crows star suffers suspected Round 1 ACL tear

//

After a shocking run with injuries in 2018, Adelaide's 2019 season has gotten off to the worst possible start with star defender Tom Doedee suffering a left knee injury.

Similar to Richmond star Alex Rance's awkward landing which resulted in an ACL tear, Doedee also landed awkwardly on his left leg in the first half of Adelaide's Round 1 clash against Hawthorn.

Following the first-half incident, Adelaide confirmed through a statement that it suspected an ACL injury for the star defender as Doedee was seen on crutches at half-time.

"The club suspects it is an ACL injury, with scans to confirm the extent of the injury in the coming days," the statement read.

Speaking on Fox Footy at half time, St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt called the injury "shattering" for both the player and the club.

"Shattering for the young man and for the football club as well," Riewoldt said.

"Given the role he plays for the team, he's just such an extraordinary player."

Doedee's injury comes after the Crows lost star duo Brodie Smith and Brad Crouch to season-long knee injuries in 2018.

The 22-year-old was one of Adelaide's rare shining lights in a disastrous 2018 season, and provided the Crows with a ready-made replacement for departed defender Jake Lever.

Doedee played 20 games in his debut season and averaged 18.1 disposals per game and ranked 10th in the AFL for total intercepts during the home and away season.
