Injury disaster for Broncos star centre

//

Brisbane Broncos star James Roberts has injured a disc in his back after limping off the field in within minutes of kick-off in the NRL opener against the Broncos, it has been revealed.

Roberts went down in the 4th minute in a seemingly innocuous tackle and hobbled from the field clutching his lumbar and arms.

He was whisked down the tunnel by trainers and wouldn’t return for the rest of the game. Following the match, Coach Anthony Seibold revealed the star centre had injured a disc in his spine.

Cowboys legend Johnathan Thurson said an injury blow for Roberts this early in the season would be devastating blow for Brisbane and Roberts’ representative hopes.

“To have an injury like this is shattering for him,” Thurston told Macca’s Thursday Night Golden Point.

“He had a great year last year and no doubt he would have been looking to repeat that, playing for the NSW Blues.

NRL great Andrew Johns was first to suggest potential nerve damage on the NRL on Nine commentary team as the centre clutched his limbs on the sideline.

“James Roberts is gone, he’ll have to come off the field, he cannot run,” Johns said immediately after the incident.

“He’s holding his back, you see he’s got pain going down his legs.”

Meanwhile its more woe for Seibold’s men with Matt Lodge likely to be charged for a late hit aimed at Cameron Munsters knees off the kick.

"You can't do that. It's a cheap shot," Nine NRL commentator and league legend Andrew Johns said during the broadcast.

"He can't protect himself. If you tackle like that, you have to go above [the knee].

"He dives at the knees. It's just dangerous."
