Manly star slammed for 'reckless' Benji hit

//

Manly's Addin Fonua-Blake might find himself in strife with the NRL match review committee after an ugly tackle at the legs of Benji Marshall.

Brisbane's Matt Lodge copped a grade-two dangerous contact charge for his hit on Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster after a kick on Thursday night, and Fonua-Blake was involved in a similar incident on Saturday.

The Manly star is expected to be charged for collecting Marshall's legs attempting a tackle after the no.6 kicked away the ball during Wests' 20-6 win over the Sea Eagles.

Immediately after the hit Marshall grabbed his left leg, appearing to be in some pain, before he was attended to by Tigers medical staff at Leichhardt Oval. Luckily Marshall was still able to play following the tackle, which referees penalised.

Benji Marshall is awkwardly tackled

"He’s launched himself a long way from Benji Marshall," league legend Greg Alexander said during the broadcast.

"That’s no good. That’s careless, reckless whatever you want to call it."

Nine NRL commentator and Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns has been calling for better protection for halves, with the smaller playmakers especially often on the end of late, ugly tackles.

"You just can't do it," Johns said on Thursday night referring to the Lodge incident.

"The kicker can't defend himself.

"You don't like your kickers having cruciate ligament injuries and being out for the year.

"You've got to get it out of the game."
