NBA legend delivers home truth on Simmons

//

NBA legend Kobe Bryant says Australian star Ben Simmons will live to regret it if he doesn’t develop a jump shot and won’t reach the next level if he doesn’t diversify his game.

Speaking with the Herald Sun on his two-day speaking tour of Melbourne, the five-time NBA champion said the Australian had the ability and mental toughness to be one of the best in the game but he won’t reach that level unless he perfects his shot.

“He’s got to get a jump shot,’’ Bryant said.

“It sounds stupid and all that but I’m dead ass serious.

“Because if not, he will regret it when his career is over.’’

The 2018 rookie of the year is having another notable year for the 76ers in their pursuit of making it out of the eastern conference and into the NB finals. Simmons is averaging 17 points, 9.1 rebounds, 7.9 assists and 1.3 steals this season and has amassed 10 triple doubles but the Australian has rarely used his jump shot all season.

While Simmons has already achieved a level of success most NBA players won’t reach, Bryant said if he wants to be mentioned in the same breath as the legends of the game he must develop the only other thing left in his game.

“What he is doing now without that is astonishing,’’ Bryant said.

“Now imagine if he could shoot the ball.

“What does that open up for you? You don’t want to retire and look back and go ‘man, if I had a jump shot what would I have done?’

“You don’t want that so I don’t care if you have to lock yourself in the gym for 10 hours a day.

“If this kid gets a jump shot — it’s a serious, serious problem.’’
