AFL great's plea to league after Dusty incident

//

Former Essendon and St Kilda great Brendon Goddard has called on the AFL to take a stand on personal sledging incidents following Dustin Martin's taunt to Shane Mumford at the weekend.

After being sledged by Mumford following a missed goal attempt, Martin is likely to be fined for making a crude gesture towards the Giants ruckman regarding his off-season drug scandal.

Speaking on AFL Tonight, Goddard compared the incident to the taunt he and the Bombers were on the end of from Hawthorn great Sam Mitchell in 2015.

"That was a bit more personal but it was almost laughable," Goddard said.

Dustin Martin

"It's kind of the cheap blow and the obvious thing to do. I'd hope that sledging moving forward is a bit more witty than that."

Martin's actions have put a spotlight on sledging in the game and Goddard said the incident could serve as a "line in the sand" moment for the AFL.

"I think the AFL should make a stand on it and draw a line in the sand," he said.

"Let's not let these kinds of things get out of hand in the future. This is not a good look and we need to do something about it and stamp it out now while they've got the opportunity.

"We haven't seen something like this for a number of years. Just get rid of it now and make it very clear to everyone that this is not acceptable and we won't accept it moving forward."
