Back problems for Day as Scott leads Masters

//

The Masters campaign of Australia’s Jason Day has started in the worst possible fashion, with the world No. 14 reportedly injuring his back picking up his daughter prior to the opening round.

Day required treatment from a physio on the second hole, with his trainer stretching his back as Day lay on the ground.

He was still able to make birdie, after smashing his second shot 254 metres and two-putting, to get back the shot he dropped at the first hole.

It’s the latest in a long list of injuries for the 31-year-old, who has been hampered by problems for a number of years. He was forced to withdraw from last month’s Arnold Palmer Invitational when his back flared up.

Meanwhile fellow Australian Adam Scott is tied for the lead late in the opening round, after a first round 69.

Scott birdied three of his last four holes, to finish at -3, one of six players currently tied at the top of the leaderboard.

The Masters is live on 9GEM with additional streams available on 9NOW.

That group briefly included four time champion Tiger Woods, who made back-to-back birdes at the 13th and 14th to move to three under, before a bogey at the 17th meant he finished with a round of 70.

Australia's Cameron Smith (-2) is also well placed after a solid finish. Smith was at +1 through 11 holes, before birdies at 13, 15 and 16.

World no. 1 Justin Rose has had a horror start, opening with a 40 on the first nine to sit at +4, while the struggles of former champion Jordan Spieth continue, he's also at +4 after nine holes.

More to come.
