Boom NBA rookie hits back at Simmons after win

//

NBA Rookie of the Year candidate Trae Young has taken a thinly-veiled shot at the reigning Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons after yet another stunning performance.

Young's 33-point, seven-rebound, 12-assist performance against Simmons' Sixers came after the Aussie said Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic was his pick of the year.

"Luka for sure. He’s playing better, his team’s winning more games," Simmons told Philly Inquirer’s Keith Pompey.

"Trae Young is killing it, same as Donovan (Mitchell), but overall I think Luka and the team’s playing a little better.

"He’s just doing a little bit more.”

When asked about Simmons' comments following Atlanta's 130-122 win over the Sixers, Young's answer came with a wry smile.

"I saw it, but I don’t really pay too much attention to it,” Young said of Simmons’ comments. "Maybe he thinks differently now.

"For me I just want to go out and compete and I don’t really care what he says."

The loss to Atlanta was the Sixers' third in its last five contests, a stretch which includes two losses to the Hawks.

Simmons struggled shooting the ball finishing an inefficient 6-of-17 from the field but did fill the box score with 15 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

After a slow start to the season, Young has blossomed after the All-Star break, posting impressive averages of 24.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game while shooting 36 percent from three.

Young is currently second in rookie scoring behind Doncic but leads all rookies in assists with 624 in 78 games this season.
