Eels hit $2.8m standoff with star captain

//

Parramatta Eels captain Clint Gutherson is reportedly on the player market after the club failed to make him an acceptable contract offer.

Gutherson is seeking a four-year deal worth about $2.8 million, according to The Daily Telegraph, and gave the Eels a Round 5 deadline to offer a reasonable deal.

But manager Sam Ayoub has now informed the club that Gutherson will be shopped around after Parramatta's offers fell well short of expectations.

The Telegraph reported that Gutherson was initially offered a two-year deal for $450,000 and $500,000, then $500,000 over both years, and finally a three-year offer for a total $1.5 million.

Though Gutherson has had some injury problems at the Eels, he has also been a standout player who has set the standards at training; a big part of the reason that he was made captain.

The fullback, 24, is believed to be keen to stay at Parramatta under Brad Arthur, though the coach's future is also in limbo. Gutherson, one of 14 Eels players off-contract this season, is in the sights of his former club Manly.

Parramatta great Peter Sterling has implored the club to get a new deal completed for Gutherson, but it appears that the Eels will need to up their offer in order to fight off keen rivals. The news won't be welcomed by Eels fans, who have dubbed their skipper 'King Gutho'.
