Joey unloads Bronco for Cronk 'dog shot'

Tevita Pangai Junior may be set for a stint on the sidelines for a brazen “cheap shot” on returning Roosters superstar Cooper Cronk.

The overzealous Bronco drew the ire of the SCG crowd on Thursday night after flattening Cronk in a blatantly late tackle well after the halfback had released the ball.

Pangai Junior was placed on report and coughed up a penalty for the Roosters who were already leading the visitors by 10-points, as Andrew Johns unloaded on the young Bronco.

“It’s a dead-set cheap shot,” Johns said on NRL on Nine’s commentary.

Pangai Junior flattens Cronk

“We’ve got to get this out of the game we keep talking about it.

“Cronk lets the ball go, and he hits him in the back. I think that should be a sin bin – it’s a cheap shot!

“You’re giving away 30kg and a front-rower smashes into your kidney. Watch the whiplash on his neck. It’s a dog shot.”

NRL great Paul Vautin argued that he didn’t want to see halves be allowed to play in a “dinner suit” but conceded Pangai’s tackled had crossed a line.

Cooper Cronk

“I don’t think you half-backs should be allowed to play in a dinner suit but that’s illegal, and that’s wrong,” he said.

“It’s late, cheap shot.

Johns explained the hit may have been part of a strategy by the Broncos to prevent Cronk, who was making his return from injury, from getting into the game.

“You see the ball release from his hands, and what they’re trying to do get Cronk on the ground so he cannot get involved in the next play.

“But you cannot do it with any force like that, it’s so dangerous. Someone is going to get really seriously injured.”

The Roosters managed to close out the half 22-0 up over the visitors.
