Johns weighs-in on Madge's infamous spray

//

Coach Michael Maguire’s sensational spray at his Tigers following their capitulation to the last placed Bulldogs has divided fans.

On one hand, Maguire’s theatrics show just how invested the veteran coach is in turning around the club’s string of mediocre seasons, on the other, it could be viewed as an unnecessary and ineffective form of critique.

NRL great Paul Vautin assured it “showed how much he cares about the club and players”, but whichever camp fans fall into, Andrew Johns assured one thing, “you’ve only got a couple per season.”

“We were watching after the game we saw Mag’s head, it just went that red, and you could see how filthy he was,” Johns said on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.

“I think there is a time and place for it and I think they deserved a spray.

“No one listens if you do it all the time. I think a couple a year at the right time I think that does the job.

“Phil Gould gave me a couple of absolute beauties in origin, absolutely tore shreds off me. One was in front of everyone which wasn’t nice.”

That sentiment was echoed by Panther supremo Phil Gould who is no stranger to giving a spray of his own from time to time.

“I reckon in a season you’ve got one good spray in you, after that it has no effect what so ever,” Gould said on Nine’s 100% Footy.

“If you’re good at it, you only need one.

“If you make it every week then they just tune out[sic] ‘this happens all the time’.”
