Magpies great slams Hird return speculation

//

Collingwood premiership captain Tony Shaw has reacted strongly to suggestions that James Hird might return to the AFL coaching ranks.

Speaking on Macquarie Sports Radio, Shaw explained that while he had nothing against the Bomber legend personally, he did not believe Hird should return.

"I don’t think it’ll happen and it shouldn’t,” Shaw said.

"He should never coach at AFL level again, whatever happened at Essendon (during the drugs saga) should never have been allowed to happen.

James Hird

"People say you’ve got to forgive and forget, no you don’t.

"What happened to them were the darkest days we’ve even seen in the history of the AFL."

Shaw further validated his opinion by explaining how he would have reacted if he was a parent of one of the 34 players involved in the saga.

"What those young players were put through, if that was my son involved as one of those young players, I would've gone down there and grabbed him by the neck and tried to belt the s--t out of him," he said.

John Worsfold

"I don't believe he should ever coach in the AFL again."

Shaw's strong comments come after Hird refused to rule out a return to a coaching role while on commentary for Triple M during the Round 2 clash between Essendon and St Kilda.

When quizzed about whether he would return, Hird said he would "never say never" and spoke about missing the camaraderie that exists at football clubs.

Further speculation has risen since Hird's return to AFL circles has coincided with the increasingly tenuous nature of Essendon coach John Worsfold's position after the Bombers' 0-2 start to the year.
