NRL star's perfect response to vile abuse

//

Esan Marsters was public enemy No.1 with keyboard warriors last week - but a little help from a Tigers legend got him back on track in the splendid upset win over the Broncos last Thursday night.

Marsters copped it from the angry hordes after missing all three shots at goal in the nail-biting round four loss to Penrith, including two ‘sitters’ - with some of the comments on his Instagram account bordering on disgusting.

They included charming remarks like: “Match Fixing?" "Single handedly lost the game for the club. Well done." "Learn to kick you f***head" ... and worse.

Marsters refused to use an ankle injury he carried into the game as an excuse and took some goal-kicking lessons from assistant coach and Tigers 2005 grand final hero Brett Hodgson to get his kicking back in order - with excellent results of five from five in the win over the Broncos.

Michael Maguire’s assistant at the Tigers, Hodgson still holds the club records for most points in a season, most goals in a match and most points in a match.

SOUTHS HIT GOODWIN ROADBLOCK, CONSIDER ROBERTS

English club Warrington are playing hardball Bryson Goodwin, blocking the veteran centre’s bid to rejoin Souths as the replacement for the retired Greg Inglis.

The Rabbitohs were keen to sign Goodwin as a short-term solution to their outside back problems in the wake of Inglis’ decision yesterday.

Goodwin was also keen to come home - but it now appears unlikely to happen.

Souths are now chasing their next option: Broncos flyer James ‘Jimmy the Jet’ Roberts.

The word out of Brisbane is that the Broncos may be happy to cut Roberts loose before June 30, given his recent poor attitude and a nagging Achilles injury.

Roberts played his best football under Wayne Bennett at the Broncos and the veteran coach thinks he can still get value out of the enigmatic centre.

SHEENS REJECTS SHARKS OFFER

Tim Sheens has rejected the chance to join Cronulla as general manager of football.

With his vast experience and high standing in the game, Sheens would have been the perfect man to bring stability and credibility back to the Sharks, who have a major image problem after their actions off the field in recent years.

But Sheens is committed to remaining with English club Hull KR, where he recently signed a new three-year deal.

The Sharks are looking in another direction, with former Titans head of football Phil Moss believed to be high on their list.

MERRIN TO DRAGONS HOPES FADE

Latest mail is that Trent Merrin back to the Dragons is unlikely to happen now.

Merrin is back in Australia on compassionate leave only a few months into a long-term deal with English club Leeds.

The Dragons were mooted as a possible home for the former Test forward in the wake of Jack de Belin’s indefinite suspension.

Merrin is a Dragons junior who played his best football at the club from 2009 to 2015.

But the Dragons do realise they need to boost their forward stocks and are considering making a move form out-of-favour Knights forward Herman Ese'ese.
