AFL teams: Tigers' injury woes continue

//

Richmond's luckless start to the 2019 AFL season has continued with key defender David Astbury ruled out of the side to take on the Western Bulldogs in Round 7.

Astbury suffered an ankle injury in the first half of the Tigers' Round 6 win over Melbourne when Demons midfielder Jake Melksham inadvertently stepped on his foot.

However, after missing the majority of the second quarter, Astbury was able to run out the remainder of the contest.

Despite the continued injury blows to his team, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick remained confident that his backup players would continue to fill the void left by the headline acts.

"It's like adding a bit of compost to a rose garden," he said.

"You get an immediate response, so that's exciting. Not that those players are compost."

The loss of Astbury comes after the Tigers lost star forward Jack Riewoldt to a long-term knee injury.

Astbury and Riewoldt join star defender Alex Rance and skipper Trent Cotchin on a star-studded Tigers injury list.
