Former WWE wrestler dead at 39

//

The WWE has confirmed Former wrestler Ashley Massaro has died aged 39 in statement on its website.

Massaro was reportedly hospitalised this week and then pronounced dead on Thursday morning US time.

The cause of death has not been revealed but it's understood her passing has been classified as "non-criminal".

"We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro," the WWE said in the statement.

"She performed in WWE from 2005-2008 and was beloved by her fellow Superstars and fans around the world. WWE offers its condolences to Ashley's family and friends."

Massaro came to prominence after winning the WWE's "2005 Raw Diva Search" -- which included a $250,000 1-year contract.

She was best known for her time as the valet for tag team champions Paul London and Brian Kendrick.

Massaro also starred on the reality show "Survivor: China" in 2007 and also appeared on the cover of Playboy.

In 2016, she was part of a lawsuit alleging she'd been sexually assaulted on a U.S. military base in 2006 during a WWE tour. The suit was dismissed last year.
