Maloney addresses future amid release reports

//

Veteran Penrith Panthers halfback James Maloney has poured water on speculation suggesting he will leave the club in the near future.

With the 32-year-old showing inconsistent form in the early part of the season, there has been suggestions that the Panthers would grant an early release of his contract, with reports linking Maloney to a move abroad to the English Super League.

However, following Penrith’s 15-12 win over the Manly Sea Eagles, Maloney said he is happy to remain at the Panthers.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’ve got another year still here,” he told Nine’s Macca’s Golden Point.

“I’ve got every intention of playing that out. I’m enjoying my time out here and I’ve got every indication that the club is happy with me here.”

After playing a vital role in the Blues’ Origin triumph last season, Maloney was overlooked by Brad Fittler this year.

While admitting that he was disappointing to miss out on Origin selection, Maloney hoped that his presence around the Panthers camp throughout the representative period would ensure a steady run of form.

However, the veteran Panther remained optimistic about selection for the Blues later in the series.

“You never know what’s going to happen. I’m pretty excited,” he said.

“While it’s disappointing to miss out on and you want to be a part of that football, it’s a chance over this period to have an uninterrupted period with Penrith and hopefully get something back on track here.

“If we can go through and have a really strong Origin period with me being here, hopefully that can help us play some finals at the end of the year.”
