NASCAR driver repeatedly punched in ugly on-track 'beef'

//

The NASCAR All-Star Race was overshadowed by a heated punch-up involving two drivers.

The race was won by Kyle Larson at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but all anyone was talking about was the fisticuffs during the cool-down lap.

After finishing 12th Clint Bowyer stopped on the track after making contact with the outside wall, following a bump from Ryan Newman who finished in 13th.

With his helmet still on, Bowyer got out of his car and furiously ran straight to Newman. Though Newman had his helmet off in his car already, but that didn't stop Bowyer from charging at him and repeatedly punching him through the window of the driver's seat.

Finally pit crew stepped in to separate the pair, but their heated exchange of words continued when Newman got out of his car.

When the fiery cool-down lap drama finally calmed down, Newman spoke to media, explaining the incident from his perspective, and didn't hold back.

Newman said an incident earlier in the race upset him, and he deliberately retaliated during the coop-down lap to demonstrate his annoyance.

"14 [Bowyer] chopped me on the front straight away, earlier in the race," Newman told Fox Sports 1.

"After the race I just went up and tapped him in the back and let him know I didn't appreciate the way he raced me and he body-slammed me.

"Then I hit him back a little bit on the back straightaway and then he just cut across my nose in Turn 3 [during the cool-down lap].

"It doesn't take much of a man to try to fight somebody with his helmet on. I think he should be embarrassed with himself."

Bowyer said he didn't understand why Newman was upset, and defended his reaction.

"I don't know what the hell his beef was. I thought he was a lap down," Bowyer said.

"Our day was over. Basically just buying time there and see if something was going to happen at the end.

"They got four-wide off of [turn] four. Hell, I thought he was a lap down. I checked up, and he run up my left rear, that's the last I saw of him.

"Then after the race he comes and runs into my back and turns me all around. I pull up next to him and he dumps me. Where I come from you get poked in the nose for that. That’s what he got."

NASCAR ruled out any penalties for the drivers over the incident.
