AFL legend calls for 'whole football department' review

//

AFL great Matthew Lloyd has called for a mid-season review into every level of the Melbourne Demons football club after a dismal 2019 season.

The Demons currently have a win-loss record of 3-9, drawing attention to their leadership group and coaching staff.

On Footy Classified, Lloyd said the club board cannot be patient any longer and should be taking a closer look at why the Demons are under-performing.

"If I was a board member, I'd want to go to [Demons coach] Simon Goodwin and the senior players over the break and say, 'We need to review what has gone on. What did we get wrong over the off-season, because this is just not good enough'," Lloyd said.

Lloyd said even the Dees skippers should have their positions re-evaluated.

"Nathan Jones won't be captain next year," Lloyd said.

"It's just whether he stays on the list. Jack Viney, they've got to ask themselves, 'Is he's the right person to  captain next year, because he can never seem to have his body fit, and should he worry about playing football?'"

Lloyd calls for urgent Demons review

Former Blues and Eagles hero Chris Judd also agreed that Viney needs "an extended break".

Lloyd said Melbourne have failed in the most basic skill execution in recent seasons with some of their stars even taking a backwards step.

"They were a hungry team. Their hunger doesn't look lacking, it's just that their skill level has gotten so poor," Lloyd said.

"[Jeff] Garlett, do they forget about Garlett from now on and try to persevere with others? Jordan Lewis, does he get a farewell game, or is that it? What do they do with Nathan Jones? Sam Weideman, how a player who ripped apart a finals has gone backwards at a rate of knots? Lever and May come back, is it the end for Oscar McDonald?"

"Max Gawn has carried this team on his back. James Harmes is trying his backside off. Why everyone else across the board has gone backwards, that's why I'd be having this review and putting it on the whole football department."
