Tennis' incredible reaction to Barty win

//

The tennis world had lauded Ashleigh Barty's French Open win - and one adorable photo has again gone viral.

Barty fans will be familiar with the image: it shows the Aussie as a kid, holding a tennis racquet and a trophy.

German player Andrea Petkovic, who lost to Barty in the third round at Roland Garros, posted the photo after her final win. American star Madison Keys, Barty's quarter-final victim, was one of many who reacted to the image.

It is a picture that beautifully sums up Barty. The Australian is incredibly likeable and her Paris triumph has sent her popularity soaring.

It was not a win that Barty, a grasscourt specialist who will start Wimbledon as a favourite, expected - especially given she started the week worried about the most fundamental aspects of the game on Roland Garros' red dirt.

“I said to my team, I was just worried about falling over,” Barty said after beating Czech teen Marketa Vondrousova in the final.

“And I can successfully say that we got to the end of the clay court season and I did not fall over once!

“This is just incredible. I never dreamt that I'd be sitting here with this trophy here at the French Open. I mean, obviously we have dreams and goals as children, but this is incredible.

“For the last fortnight, the stars have aligned for me. I have been able to play really good tennis when I've needed it … I think any time I can play my brand of tennis, I know that I can match it against the best in the world.

“I'm learning more and more every single time that I play, learning how to use my variety and use it as best I can. It's just been an amazing two weeks.”

Barty world No.2 after Slam win

Tennis icons Rod Laver and Billie Jean King were among those who paid tribute to the new world No.2 after her win.

And the reaction from fellow players, including a raft of fellow Grand Slam winners, was wonderful. Barty, 23, is clearly a favourite in the locker room.

Barty's laconic demeanour was enjoyed by global media after she lifted the trophy.

"This is incredible," Barty said as she was presented with the Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen by Chris Evert.

"It's been the most amazing journey that we've been on for the past three years and I feel like this is just the start for us. Let's go and celebrate."
