'This is art': Tennis stars marvel at racquet smash

//

Tennis tantrums are fairly common occurrences on the pro tours, but every once in a while there comes along one that simply takes your breath away.

Enter Mario Vilella Martinez.

The Spaniard got into an epic tantrum in the third set of his 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 defeat at the hands of Bosnia's Tomislav Brkic at an ATP Challenger in Kazakhstan.

After losing the match on a break point in the third set, Vilella Martinez absolutely destroyed his racquet, bashing it into the clay five times before pegging it at the fence behind him at Shymkent.

So impressive was his fit of rage American tennis ace Madison Keys used it as an example of her frustration when she can't watch her favourite TV show.

Fellow WTA star Laura Robson went as far as to call the world no. 262's racquet smash "art", which Coco Vandeweghe agreed.

Nine's Tony Jones described it as the "tennis tantrum of the year" on the Today show on Tuesday morning.

"He went absolutely ballistic after losing his match and his cool," Jones said.

"It warrants a smack on the bottom I reckon. It's just toddler behaviour," Georgie Gardner added.
