Kiwi water polo team in horrific balcony collapse

//

Athletes in South Korea for the FINA World Championships have been caught up in a tragic balcony collapse at a nightclub.

Speaking to New Zealand radio NewstalkZB, the captain of the Kiwi men's water polo team described in horrific detail what athletes witnessed at the scene.

"Basically there was seven or eight of us at the club last night. Business as usual, and then it just collapsed beneath our feet. There's an upstairs area and It literally just fell from underneath us," Matt Small said in a call to the radio station on Saturday morning.

"It didn't even feel stable the whole night and then it literally collapsed. There were...dead...literally dead people everywhere."

Small was able to confirm that to his knowledge none of the New Zealand water polo team were hurt or injured.

"Everyone's really shaken up at the moment.," he said.

"I was on the floor that collapsed. I was upstairs...and thee one that collapsed was the one that I was on.

"I guess we fell on top of the heads of other people that were beneath us ."

Small said they were dancing when they fell about "five or six metres" before "everyone started rushing out of the club".
