NBA rookie sensation signs huge shoe deal

//

After several months of canvassing offers, NBA sensation and No.1 draft pick Zion Williamson has confirmed he has signed a multiyear shoe deal with Nike's Jordan Brand.

The terms of the deal were not released but according to ESPN, several competitors had offered the New Orleans Pelicans star more than $10 million annually in their negotiations, according to industry sources.

Sources says Williamson’s deal with Nike’s Jordan brand is worth $107 million (US$75m) over four years.

It's a big win for Nike after $2 billion was wiped from its share price when Williamson's Nike shoe burst open during a college game for Duke earlier in the year.

Williamson announced the deal on Instagram.

"I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the Jordan Brand family," Williamson said.

"Since I was a kid, I dreamed of making it to the league and having the type of impact on the game Michael Jordan had and continues to have today. He was one of those special athletes I looked up to, and I really can't express how happy and excited I am for this journey."

Jordan paid tribute to Williamson's “incredible determination, character and play.”

“He’s an essential part of the new talent that will help lead the brand into the future,” Jordan said. “He told us he would ‘shock the world,’ and asked us to believe him. We do.”

Williamson's deal is the biggest since LeBron James' shoe contract with Nike in 2003 for $US87 million.

Williamson's contract also eclipses Kevin Durant's seven-year, $US60 million deal when in 2007 and also dwarfs Aussie Ben Simmons' Nike deal worth a guaranteed $US20 million.

Nike wined and dined Williamson and his family and were invited to Nike's Beaverton campus in Oregon in the lead up to the draft. The trip was designed to give the star a tour of the company's headquarters and also to reveal future apparel designs.

While just under 70% NBA players wear Nike shoes, only 7% of the NBA is contracted to the Jordan Brand, with Nike looking to bring some young blood into the fold. The Jordan Brand currently has featured sneakers for aging stars Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul and Williamson is just the kind of star the apparel giant was hoping to snare.

"Over the last 34 years we've built an incredible roster of talent with the same determination and greatness as MJ," said Howard White, Jordan vice president of brand affairs.

"There is something special about Zion that reminds me of MJ when he was younger."
