Ashleigh Barty has answered the challenge of dangerous home hope Lauren Davis to advance to the third round of the US Open under the roof in New York.

"When I saw it was raining I was pretty happy we were on this beautiful court with the roof," Barty said in her post-match interview on court.

Australia's second seed fought back from a service break down in the second set to record a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win on a rain-marred third day at Flushing Meadows.

Barty will play either Peng Shuai or 30th-seeded Maria Sakarri next for a place in the last 16 for the second-straight year.

"I knew I was doing the right things [tonight]. It was about execution. It's difficult conditions out here," Barty said.

"But very happy to be able to come through and play a really good tiebreak there.

"Even though the [ranking] number is different [to last year] I don't feel a hell of a lot different.

"I feel like I've had a very consistent year and I'm looking forward to my next match now."
