Rabbitohs hero to announce retirement: report

//

South Sydney Rabbitohs hero John Sutton will confirm his NRL retirement this week, a new report says.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday that Sutton could announce the end of his record-breaking career as early as Wednesday.

The 34 year-old local junior is on a one-year contract which was always expected to be his last. His retirement will come at the end of this season, in which the Rabbitohs harbour legitimate premiership hopes.

Sutton became South Sydney's first 300-game player last season, with his tally currently at 329 matches and 60 tries across 16 seasons with the club.

Sutton captained the Rabbitohs' 2014 premiership win, their first title in 43 years. That triumph came a decade after his debut for the club.

Sutton has enjoyed a decorated career but narrowly missed out on major representative honours with the NSW State of Origin team.
