Reigning premiers handed tough path to repeat

//

After a shock loss to Hawthorn, the West Coast Eagles will open the 2019 finals against Essendon at Optus Stadium.

Heading into the final round, the Eagles looked poised for the double-chance, but the disappointing result meant that Collingwood secured the vital top four spot.

Elsewhere, the Brisbane Lions held onto a top two spot despite a loss against Richmond at the MCG, meaning it will host the same opponent at the Gabba in a fortnight.

Here is the full AFL finals fixture for Week 1:

1st Elimination Final:
West Coast Eagles v Essendon, Optus Stadium, Thursday, September 5, 8.10pm AEST

1st Qualifying Final:
Geelong v Collingwood, MCG, Friday, September 6, 7.50pm AEST

2nd Elimination Final:
GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs, GIANTS Stadium, Saturday, September 7, 3.20pm AEST

2nd Qualifying Final:
Brisbane Lions v Richmond, Gabba, Saturday, September 7, 7.25pm AEST
